Caring for Seniors: How to Prevent Wandering

Caregivers of older adults with cognitive conditions know that one of the major concerns they have is how to prevent wandering. Many older adults are at risk of wandering when they have medical conditions such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, and dementia.

If you’re providing senior care or personal care for someone with the risk of wandering, here are some tips to improve security at home:

  • Add new locks.
It can be dangerous for your loved one with a cognitive condition to go out of the house without anyone accompanying him or her, especially at night. Install a few locks or replace the old ones with locks that your loved one can’t open easily.
  • Get them to carry ID.
Wandering is an unstoppable behavior. All you can do is prevent the worst situations from happening. Aside from having a caregiver provide home care in Atlanta, Georgia for them, make sure that they always carry an identification card with their most up-to-date info on it. In fact, you can even turn their ID into medical ID jewelry.
  • Use a radio tracking device or GPS device.
Some people may not like having a GPS device on them all the time, but this is actually the best way to keep track of where a senior is all the time.

Rosewood Home Care is here with a mission. We want to provide you or your loved one with quality non-medical home care in Georgia. If you have any questions about our care services, kindly send us a message and we’ll get back to you as soon as we can.
